South London Garden Challenges We Know Well
South London has its own set of design problems. Not every garden designer working in London has actually dug into them. We have.
London clay soil. It is heavy, drains poorly, cracks in summer and compacts underfoot. Most of South London sits on it. Getting this right in the design — improving drainage, choosing plants that can handle waterlogged winters and dry summers, specifying sub-bases correctly for paving — is not optional. Get it wrong and you end up with a lifted patio after the first winter frost.
Victorian and Edwardian terraces. The classic South London plot: 6–9 metres wide, 12–20 metres long, often with a side return, usually north or south-facing depending which side of the street you are on. These gardens need to do a lot with not much width. We design a lot of them. The temptation to fill the whole thing with paving is understandable but wrong — the right balance of planting, lawn (even a small one) and hard surface makes these spaces feel far better.
Shade. North-facing plots and tight terraces create deep shade in the back half of the garden. This is not a problem if the planting plan accounts for it. We specify shade-tolerant plants that genuinely perform: Sarcococca for winter scent, Hakonechloa for movement, Fatsia for structure, ferns for texture. Conservation areas. Dulwich Village, Blackheath, parts of Lewisham and Greenwich all have conservation area designations. Some changes — removing front garden walls, certain fences, outbuildings above a certain size — may require planning permission. We flag these issues early so they do not cause delays during build.
Access. Many South London terraces have no side access. All materials have to come through the house. This affects what can realistically be specified and how the build is sequenced. We factor this into every quote from the start — no surprises.

Can you design a narrow Victorian terrace garden?
This is one of the most common brief types we get in South London. A 6–8 metre wide plot with no side access and a mix of sun and shade needs careful zoning to work well. We always consider the aspect first — a north-facing garden needs a completely different approach to a south-facing one — then design around how the space will actually be used. Do I need planning permission for landscaping in South London?
Most rear garden works — patios, decking, planting, garden walls — are permitted development and do not need planning permission. Can you work with difficult access — no side gate, materials through the house?
Yes. We have quoted and built many South London projects with no side access. Materials, skips and equipment all have to come through the property. We factor this into the build quote from the start, select materials in manageable sizes where needed, and sequence the work to minimise disruption. It is a common South London reality, not a deal-breaker.
Do you offer design only, or do you need to manage the build too?
